Cellulite Treatment: Treating Your Cellulite

What Causes Stretch Marks

Stretch MarksStretch marks happen when the skin is stretched for a prolonged period or when it happens rapidly. Of the three layers of skin; the epidermis, dermis and the subcutaneous stratum, it is the dermis that appears to be affected by the expansion. It is this region that helps skin retain elasticity.

The dermis contains concentrations of collagen and elastic fibers called elastin. When these substances and tissues are weakened, skin damage occurs. When rapid weight gain happens the resulting stretching seems to lead to tearing of underlying fibers and that results small rips and scarring.

Other considerations that appear to increase susceptibility to stretch marks can be genetics, and certain skin types. For example, people with dry skin are more likely to have stretch marks than those who have oily skin. Stretch marks can happen readily in both males and females.

In addition hormones have been implicated in the occurrences of stretch marks. Stretch marks generally occur on the breasts, hips, arms and thighs. At the onset, they tend to be pinkish or purple. In time as the damage heals, stretch marks generally fade to pale or white.

Stretch Marks Treatment

While there doesn’t appear to be one definitive cure for stretch marks, there are options available touted as stretch mark cures. For example, treatment options include laser, derma abrasion and various versions of stretch mark cream. In the quest to get rid of stretch marks a lot of attention has been focused on topical application of cream and oils like coconut.

Some treatment options focus on prevention, such a dietary changes and the use of topical solutions during the course of pregnancy, or when starting a weight training regime.
